What Is Yixing Zisha Clay Teapot
Yixing Purple Clay Teapot
Yixing purple clay teapot, also known as Yixing zisha teapot, is one of the most famous teapot varieties in China. Purple clay (or Zisha Clay) is globally recognized as one of the best raw materials used to make Chinese tea sets. Its most famous place of origin is Yixing City in Jiangsu Province, historically known as Yangxian.
What Is Purple Clay? Where Did It Come From?
Purple clay is a mineral formed about 350 million years ago. It is made of quartz, kaolin, mica, hematite and iron elements mixed in different proportions; after firing at high temperatures, an extremely strong and stable structure will be formed inside, thus giving the finished product excellent thermal shock resistance.
Unlike ordinary clay that is mined directly in the form of soil, natural purple clay raw materials exist in the form of hard rock. It must be ground into a coarse powder and then mixed with water to make a plastic clay.
The traditional purple clay mud refining process is extremely time-consuming, often taking years or even decades. The raw ore extracted will be placed in an open-air environment and allowed to be naturally weathered by wind, sun and rain until it collapses into fine gravel. It is generally believed in the industry that the longer the time it is stored in the open ("soil cultivation"), the better the quality of the refined clay will be. The weathered gravel is then finely ground, and repeatedly kneaded and tempered with water to finally form a fine and smooth clay; then, the clay is buried deep underground for further "stale"(i.e. aging). The long-term aging process can greatly optimize the plasticity of the clay and its forming properties during the production process.
Technological Characteristics
The fully refined purple clay mud has a natural porous structure. It is worth mentioning that pure purple clay mud does not contain lead; even if it contains trace elements, its content is far lower than the strictest food safety standards set by the European Union, Japan and other regions.
Thanks to these natural advantages, Yixing's purple clay teapots and purple clay cooking utensils do not need to be glazed, thus retaining their original and simple texture. This unglazed porous surface structure allows the teapot to be naturally "maintained" during daily use-that is, gradually absorbing the aroma and color emitted by the brewed tea soup or cooked food.
If it is used consistently for making tea, after months or even years of use, it is generally believed that this teapot can continue to enhance the taste and flavor of tea soup. This natural "teapot raising" process has greatly increased the value of those old purple clay teapots that have been carefully used over the years; among them, high-quality treasures can even sell for astounding sky-high prices on the market. In order to avoid cross-flavours, tea lovers usually equip special teapots for different types of teas: one for making oolong tea, one for making green tea, and the other for making Pu 'er tea. Many teapots are even specially designed to be tailored for specific teas. Wide-mouthed teapot is most suitable for brewing large-leaf teas, such as ancient tree Pu 'er and oolong tea, because these teas will fully stretch after brewing.
Different types of teas nourish and "maintain" teapots in unique ways. Every time it is brewed, the essence of the tea will penetrate into the teapot body; as long as daily use is adhered to and appropriate maintenance, the texture of the teapot will gradually become smooth, warm and shiny.
Although ‘zisha’ literally means ‘purple sand,’ natural purple clay actually comes in a rich spectrum of colors, including varying shades of brown, red, black, green, and white.
Suggestion For Opening A Teapot
If you plan to use the teapot for daily brewing, it is highly recommended to properly "open the teapot" before first use. First, rinse the teapot thoroughly with boiling water, then brew the best tea leaves, and soak the entire teapot in the tea soup for 12 to 24 hours. Another practical method is to put the teapot into a pot with your preferred tea leaves and boil it for 5 to 10 minutes to ensure that the teapot fully absorbs the aroma of the tea. Yixing's purple clay teapots come in various shapes, styles, and quality levels; their market prices often vary greatly depending on the reputation of the teapot makers and their craftsmanship.
